Storyboarding Exercise #1

The Lonely Horse Trainer,
       Storyboarded by Josephine Tsay

Week: Jan 28 – Feb 3, 2013

In this exercise, I'm taking a very simple story and creating seven beat boards to
convey an
overall feel, or emotion, of the story. When drawing these boards,
I kept the figures simple
(almost abstract), to try and really push the emotion
I have selected for each board.

The Process:
Seven people created the story together about this lonely horse trainer, by using a popular
storytelling
improv exercise, where a different person finishes each of the following sentences:

"Once upon a time..."

"And everyday..."
"Until one day..."
"And because of this..."
"And because of that..."
"Until finally..."
"And ever since that day..."

The End.

The Prompt:

•Once upon a time in rural Kentucky, there was a lonely horse Trainer who couldn't find work training horses.
(Emotion: loneliness)

•And everyday, the Trainer walked by a farm on the way to town. As he walked by this farm he noticed a horse that the men were having trouble taming.
(Emotion: trouble)

•Until one day, on his way passing the farm, the Trainer Saw the Horse freak out more than usual and he/she injured his/her self. The owner was about to put it down. LHT intervenes on the horse's behalf. Having no money to pay for the horse LHT offers his dead wife's locket (his most prized possession) as payment.

(Emotion: stakes)

•And because of this, LHT has a renewed interest in training horses again. LHT exhausts himself trying everything he can to get the horse to trust him unfortunately  the horse wants nothing to do with LHT.
(Emotion: effort)

•And because of that,  LHT and the horse have a good or bad moment of escalation/Conflict.
(Emotion: accident - during training, the horse accidentally flings the horse trainer off the edge of a cliff without meaning to)

•Until finally, LHT have a true bonding moment and the horse Trusts LHT.
(Emotion: rescue - the horse saves the trainer, thus solidifying the bond between them)

•And ever since that day, He cleaned up his act and started  to train horses again.

(Emotion: happiness/stability)
